Copying my blog

Something that has been exercising my mind for the past few days, since I had my second e-mail melt-down, is how I should archive my blog. Just in case something happens, and all of a sudden they disappear off the net. Yes, I know it isn't supposed to happen, but there is over 12 months on there now, documenting almost my every stitch.

I have copies of what is on Flickr, but not what is on my blog.

So, in idle moments, I have been calling up each month from the archives, and using the "save page as" function (I am in Mozilla, I assume other browsers are the same). Each month gets saved as a file, with a corresponding folder that includes all illustrations for that month. I will save them off then on DVD - they are big files.

Is anyone else doing anything????

Am I panicking?????

I am gone now for a couple of days - back around Thursday.

I back up regularly too - I think its sensible with anything that is digital - so the short answer is I don't think you are panicing - just sensible

I've been printing mine out lately--i have the same fear, don't know why--i think it's only wise as artists that we *do* have some "hard copy"!

I think I should be thinking about backing up too..
To think all that work gone.. if anything happened..
Must have a long think about this..
I'm a bit scared to do what Heather said to do..
I wonder what's best..

you might want to take a look at http://bloggerfordummies.blogspot.com/
April 11 post, he mentions a free programme called Blog Collector Lite, I haven't had time to look at it thoroughly yet but it could be worth considering

I don't know why I am still here reading blogs when I should be asleep (and when I WAS going to try and sew some wings for a headless rooster this evening ... still have to work out how to do the head sometime too ... I know - sounds weird - if it works it is going to be a handbag) ... but for some odd reason I ended up here, now, reading this particular post ... my blog (also on blogger) gets e-mailed to me every time I post something to it (which isn't that often lately) - I think that is an option you can choose when you are fiddling around in the settings/etc. Another option that you can fiddle with is to allow it to go out as an XML feed ... which doesn't make much sense if you don't know what one is, but what it means is that then people (including you if you want to save a copy of your blog that way) can subscribe to it ... kind of like a mailing list - every time there is a post to the blog, then anyone who is subscribed to it gets a copy (or they get it daily - depends how you subscribe) ... I am subscribed to a few blogs using something called feedblitz (www.feedblitz.com I think)
... I think I found it mentioned on someones blog - LOL
Actually I think the newest version of Internet Explorer has some thingy where you can subscribe to feeds on there ... not sure ... have not had a good look ... so I just looked - LOL - is under tools - "feed discovery" ... takes you to the feed and if you click on the subscribe link then it looks like it will work ( I didn't try it ... easier to just have them all working the other way ... at this hour of night anyway!!!)
Of course those 2 methods (e-mails from blogger or feeds) save the text and the images, but not nescessarily the look - my blog has coloured text on a dark background but the e-mails and the feedblitz thingy are just black text on white ... but it is what I said that I mainly want to save, not what colour the screen was! lol
At one stage I was printing out the e-mails of each blog post I did, but I have not got around to doing that lately ... maybe I should print out the rest of the posts I have not done yet ... then I can put those in the folder with the others ... if I can find the folder ... LOL
(actually - until I find the folder, I don't know what posts I have printed out ... I think that was why I didn't do the last few ... either I was here nad the folder was on my desk at work ... or maybe it was when I was at work and the folder is here at home ... somewhere ...
The weird thing is - I think half the reason I started writing a blog, was so i had a place to 'save' all the various weird thoughts and ramblings I was posting to all the various yahoogroups/etc that I am on ... partly in case yahoo died or lost them and partly because even if they stayed on yahoo forever - I would never know where to find them all if I ever did want to go back and read what I had said ... but I seem to have a whole pile of stuff saved in an e-mail folder called "stuff for my blog" (mostly dragged out of the "sent items" folder before my dear husband can empty it ;-) and it just does not seem to find it's way to my blog like it was supposed to ...
er ... I had better stop - this is not my blog and here I am raving on and on and on ...
